Under the title ‘Norms and Politics in Artistic Practice, the Art Infrastructure and the Funding System’, artists/writers Jack Segbars and Falke Pisano (both PBK members) discussed the politics of the small-scale and non-profit art sector, as part of ‘Common Ground’ sessions at Art Rotterdam. How does this sector relate to the broader art infrastructure and the art market? Joining the discussion was Lara Khaldi and Sofia Patat (artistic and business director of de Appel), Hilda Moucharrafieh (current co-director of Platform BK), Koen Bartijn (artistic director of VHDG and former co-director of Platform BK), and Maziar Afrassiabi (visual artist, educator, founder and director of Rib, and member of PBK). Central questions were: to what extent do financing and governance influence the role of this sector? And how much autonomy does it have in developing organizational ideas as part of its artistic ambitions?
