Last night, in the very last period before the election recess, the House of Representatives prematurely approved the law to maintain the low VAT rate for culture, art, sports, news media, books, and events. This means the official VAT increase is off the table.
It was crucial that this decision was made before the elections. If the debate had been postponed to a new House of Representatives – which was the plan – the outcome would no longer have been certain. Thanks to an initiative by the Christian Union, CDA, D66, and SGP, the matter was discussed and voted on in a suggestive manner.
The Creatieve Coalitie took the initiative in this matter, together with the Maatschappelijke Bondgenoten. They have published an article on their website with more information: https://www.decreatievecoalitie.nl/nieuws/tweede-kamer-draait-btw-verhoging-terug
With last night’s vote, we can conclude with relief: the VAT debacle has finally come to an end.
