Ruim een week voor het officiële einde van documenta 15 hebben ruangrupa en de lumbung community (de gemeenschap van deelnemende kunstenaars) zich teruggetrokken uit de tentoonstelling. De terugtrekking is een reactie op de aanhoudende beschuldigingen van antisemitisme aan het adres van een tentoonstelling, waarin onder meer solidariteit en de antikoloniale strijd in Palestina werden gethematiseerd. Directe aanleiding was de persverklaring van een wetenschappelijk commité dat in opdracht van de Documenta-organisatie de antisemitismeclaims onderzocht. Ruangrupa en de lumbung community schrijven:

‘We are angry, we are sad, we are tired, we are united. We have tried our best to stay above the chaos, hostility, racism and censorship that have engulfed this edition of documenta. We have tried our best to stay focused and committed to our work and the promises and hopes of the lumbung. We have been resilient and in solidarity with our communities, friends, supporters, hosts and guests. […] Actors with a coordinated agenda have been determined to find any indication of pre-assumed “guilt,” twisting any critical detail into a simplistic anti-Semitic reading and repeating the same accusation again and again until it became accepted as fact. It is obvious to us that the same mechanism of passing the ball from cyberbullies and racist bloggers to mainstream media outlets to racist attackers on the ground to politicians and even to academics is being reproduced in each situation.’ Lees hun hele statement hier.

De stroom van ongegronde kritiek en het pestgedrag dat ruangrupa en de lumbung community te verduren kregen was een pijnlijk en frustrerend schouwspel. Platform BK is solidair met ruangrupa en de lumbung community en steunt hun verzet tegen de organisatie van documenta. We zullen waar we kunnen bijdragen aan het ‘blijvend voortbouwen op de lumbung’.

Een broodnodig gesprek over wat er gebeurd is tijdens documenta15 zal op 23 en 24 september plaatsvinden in Framer Framed en de Akademie van Kunsten. Zij organiseren i.s.m. het Van Abbemuseum het programma (un)Common Grounds: Reflecting on documenta fifteen. Ook tijdens het Platform BK Solidarity Camp, dat plaatsvindt van 22 t/m 24 september in Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons, zal er ruimte zijn voor deze discussie en het trekken van gevolgen.

It is not a mere practice for documenta fifteen; it is a model we have been practicing before we gathered here and which we will continue to practice as a way to be in solidarity, a way to be inclusive, a way for thinking, sharing, documenting, a way to fight, a way for resilience.’
