Alex de Vries
In 1979 Alex de Vries (1957) co-founded the art magazine Metropolis M. From 1984 until 1989 he worked at the Shaffy Theatre in Amsterdam. After that we became Head of Communications at the art academy of Arnhem, where he worked for 8 years. From 1997 until 2001 he was the director of the art academy in ’s Hertogenbosch. Since then De Vries has worked as an independent author, advisor and curator in the bureau Stern / Den Hartog & De Vries in The Hague. Together with his business partner, graphic designer Jan Willem den Hartog, he manages the publishing bureau De Zwaluw. De Vries works for museums, independent art spaces, festivals, individual artists, academies, funds and governments. Most of the texts that Alex de Vries writes are a result of visits to artists' studios. In 2018 his book ‘Marten Hendriks Leven/Werk’ was published which describes the career of visual artists Marten Hendriks between 1963-2018. Alex de Vries received a grant from the Mondriaan Fund for the realisation of this project.
